Canada's Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program 2019

Individuals wishing to sponsor their parents and / or grandparents in 2019 can begin the process by submitting an Interest to Sponsor form on January 28 at noon, Eastern Standard Time.

The form will be available for a limited time. The Department of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship of Canada will accept the full applications of potential sponsors in the order in which they were received, until the limit of 20,000 full applications is reached.

This “first-in, first-served” approach will replace the random selection process that was used last year.

Canadian Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen said that the Interest to Sponsor form has been improved and now includes features that can help the department identify duplicate applications and alleged fraud.

To be eligible to sponsor parents and grandparents, applicants must:

  • Be over 18; and
  • To be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.

If you sponsor your parents and grandparents to come to Canada as a permanent resident, you must:

  • Support this person and their dependents financially
  • Observe the minimum required income for this program.
  • Sponsors must also demonstrate that they have had the required level of income for three consecutive years. If you are married, the income of both persons may be included
  • The sponsor and the sponsored relative must sign a sponsorship agreement that obliges the sponsor to provide financial support to the sponsored person for up to 20 years.
