New opportunities for young people in Canada and Portugal

The new arrangement between Canada and Portugal will give people between the ages of 18 and 35 the opportunity to live and work in any country. The 3 May agreement on youth mobility will allow 2,000 Portuguese and 2,000 Canadian young people to live and work in each country through the Working Holiday program, International Co-op, and the Young Professional Streams of the International Experience Canada (IEC) program. The agreement, which will enter into force in 2019, will bring a number of partner countries and territories to 34, which have similar agreements with Canada. "The opportunity to travel and work allows young people to immerse themselves in a different culture and develop life skills, while improving their employment at home," said Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada. Jose Luis Carneiro, Secretary of State of the Portuguese Communities Abroad, said the agreement would allow Canadian and Portuguese youth to "better understand each other's culture, language and society."
