A negative COVID-19 test is now required to enter Canada

Effective January 7, 2021, all travelers arriving in Canada by air will be required to obtain a negative
COVID-19 test within 72 hours of their departure time. The test must be a PCR test, which is currently
considered the most effective coronavirus test. However, this does not replace the 14-day quarantine
requirement.

As a reminder, it is required by law that all those arriving in Canada must quarantine for 14 days. This
means that they must stay indoors at all times and have a plan on how they will obtain groceries, food
and medicine. Those who break quarantine rules may face up to 6 months in prison or up to $750,000
CAD in fines.

Checklist for travellers to Canada:

  • Travellers must have a negative PCR test for COVID-19 obtained up to 3 days prior to travel.
  • Travellers must have a 14-day quarantine plan. They must know how they intend to reach their place of quarantine and how they intend to obtain essential items such as food, groceries or medicine.
  • Travellers must install the ArriveCAN mobile application prior to travelling to Canada. They must provide personal information as well as their flight details. They are also required to complete a daily self-assessment on the application.
