Paid internship for international student in Canada.

The Government of Canada is investing in a new program designed for students. This program will help students who study in technical, engineering, mathematical and business programs gain experience and better prepare for work. Patty Hajdu, the Minister of Employment, Development and Labor, announced on August 28 that through this program 60,000 vacancies will be created within five years.

The government is developing an investment plan worth 73 million CAD to create 10,000 paid jobs for students and to establish partnerships between employers and colleges and universities in Canada. According to BioTalent Canada, one of the partners of the program, 33% of companies in the biotechnology sector report a shortage of qualified personnel.

In addition 40 % of these companies show that the lack of qualified personnel affects their success. "By providing students with practical experience in training, they will strengthen Canada's economy by narrowing the gap between industry and academia," said Rob Henderson, President and CEO of BioTalent Canada.

Partnerships with employers

  • Program partners, such as BioTalent Canada, who represent the interests of employers, will work with colleges and universities to implement the program. Employers will receive subsidies for salaries for students.

Program Benefits

Employers, including small and medium-sized enterprises will work together with colleges and universities to help students be ready to work and develop the full range of skills that employers are looking for.

If students receive such practice during their studies they have more chances:

  • Receive higher wages and a greater probability of full-time employment;
  • Find work in areas closely related to their research; and
  • Develop technical and professional skills, such as strategic thinking, problem solving and teamwork.
