Three-year Canada Immigration Plan for 2018-2020

The Government of Canada has published a three-year immigration plan for 2018-2020, which aims to invite 980,000 new permanent residents of the country. The plan was published on November 1, 2017.

Most new permanent residents will pass as economic immigrants, of which 242,100 are expected through programs managed within the Express Entry system.

The federal government will also continue to work with the provinces to invite up to 183,800 new permanent residents through the provincial program (PNP) from 2018 to 2020.

Canada will also welcome up to 265,500 spouses, common law  partners, dependents, parents, grandparents and permanent residents in the Family Class program. Finally, Canada will continue to uphold its tradition of being a safe haven for those in need. It will take up to 137,350 refugees, as well as up to 12,250 people for humanitarian and other reasons.

In total, the government intends to welcome 310,000 new permanent residents in 2018, followed by 330,000 in 2019 and 340,000 in 2020.

A three-year commitment is a departure from previous immigration plans, which usually set targets for a 12-month period. The government says that a longer plan will help interested parties, including provincial and employers' governments, plan their work in advance. Announcing the plan, the Minister of Immigration of Canada Ahmed Hussen said that the most ambitious goals set in the history of Canada. "Beginners play a vital role in our society. Immigration in partnership with our hospitable society has formed a country that we all call home, "Minister Hussain said.

"This ambitious plan will benefit all Canadians, as immigrants contribute to economic growth and keep our country competitive in the global economy." Minster Hussen added that immigration is necessary to support the elderly in Canada, and by the year 5355 five million people retire, and the forecasts show that there will be insufficient people to support them.
